The Ideal Full Day Out in Caernarfon

Breakfast at the Black Boy Inn

If you are staying at a hotel in town, or even more conveniently our very own hotel, the Black Boy Inn in Caernarfon, we have a splendid breakfast menu available and we encourage guests to enjoy this.

From full Welsh breakfasts to lighter options, it’s the perfect way to fuel up before a day of exploring. Guests often enjoy our cosy dining areas in the morning, where the scent of fresh coffee and grilled local produce while dining in Caernarfon sets the tone for the day.

A morning walk on Dinas Dinlle Beach

The light is most beautiful at Dinas Dinlle first thing in the morning, and thus, we recommend that our guests take a short jaunt over to the coast of Dinas Dinlle. You can enjoy stunning views down the Llŷn Peninsula coastline, with outstanding views of Yr Wyddfa as well as over to the cusp of Fort Belan and across the Foryd Bay and Snowdonia. This is the site of an Iron Age hillfort that, in legend, was home to Lleu Llaw Gyffes.

It’s a refreshing spot to take in the sea air, do a bit of beachcombing, or even enjoy a gentle paddle if the weather permits. There’s parking nearby, and the beach is also a great spot for families to stretch their legs before a full day of sightseeing.

A trip to Caernarfon Castle

This medieval fortification is among the most amazing sights in all of North Wales, its imposing towers make quite a scene indeed. The history of the castle is nothing short of impressive.

Built in 1283 by Edward I (Longshanks) as a means to oppress the local rebellious populace. The castle was however taken over during a rebellion. It’s worth noting that to this day, it’s the Welsh flag – the red dragon of Cadwaladr – that flies proudly above Caernarfon Castle, a powerful symbol of enduring Welsh identity.

Caernarfon Castle stands as both a monument to turbulent medieval history and a symbol of modern Welsh pride. Inside, you’ll find exhibitions, winding staircases, and panoramic views from the ramparts. Children love exploring the towers, and it’s an ideal family stop just a few minutes’ walk from the Black Boy Inn.

Lunch at the Black Boy Inn

Nip back to the Black Boy Inn for a quick lunch, maybe fish and chips would be a good choice? How about a salad. There’s something for everyone.

We take pride in using local produce where possible, and our lunch menu is tailored to suit every appetite, whether you’re in the mood for a hearty pub classic or something lighter. It’s also a good time to try one of our local ales at our Caenarfon Pub  or a soft drink before heading back out.

Watch a movie at Galeri Caernarfon

With all the fantastic films that are set to come out soon, a cheeky trip to the cinema at Galeri Caernarfon is a great idea. There are family films to go and watch with the kids, romantic films to watch with that special someone, and action and comedies to watch with your buddies – just about anything you could ask for, all told.

Located on the waterfront and just a short walk from the inn, Galeri Caernarfon also hosts art exhibitions, theatre performances, and live music, making it a vibrant cultural hub in the heart of town. Check out their programme to see what’s on during your visit.

Watching the sunset on the Porth yr Aur

The sun slowly disappearing beyond the horizon is a sight to behold indeed. You can sit on a bench, or perch on the wall while watching the sunset, on the banks of the glorious Menai Strait. You’ll be able to see the distant headlands of Llanddwyn Island on a clear day.

For those interested in photography, this is one of the best golden hour spots in town. The soft light over the water, with boats gently bobbing and historic stone walls nearby, makes it a serene and timeless moment to savour.

Dinner and drinks at the Black Boy Inn

The Black Boy Inn is arguably the best place to eat a hearty dinner and drinks in Caernarfon town, thanks to its comprehensive menu, a delicious selection of starters, mains and desserts, and a lovely array of drinks. The best spot in town to enjoy an evening of merriment and food.

Evenings at the inn are all about atmosphere – warm, welcoming, and full of charm. Our historic interiors add character to every meal, whether you’re toasting with friends or enjoying a quiet dinner for two. And don’t forget to try one of our much-loved Welsh puddings to round off your day.
